Install the app on Linux
Which package to choose between AppImage, .deb and .rpm, how to install it and what to do if the AppImage doesn’t start or the icon doesn’t appear.
Updated on 2 November 2026
ArchiviOnline is also available for Linux: it’s the same app as on Windows and macOS, with the same screens and the same sync. It runs on 64-bit computers with an Intel or AMD processor (x86_64) with Ubuntu 22.04 and later, Debian 12 and later, Linux Mint, Fedora, openSUSE, AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux 10.
Download the app only from the links on this page or the Download page on archivionline.it, or from the link your organisation gave you. Don’t install copies received by email or from other sites.
Which package to choose
The app comes in three packages: choose only one. If you don’t know which, take the AppImage: it works almost everywhere and it’s the only one that updates itself.
| AppImage (recommended) | .deb | .rpm | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distributions | almost every recent 64-bit distribution | Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint, Pop!_OS, Zorin, elementary | Fedora, openSUSE, AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux 10 |
| Updates | automatic, as on Windows and macOS | by hand | by hand |
| Administrator password | usually not | yes, to install | yes, to install |
| In the applications menu | no: you open it from the file | yes | yes |
| Download | ArchiviOnline-Linux.AppImage | ArchiviOnline-Linux.deb | ArchiviOnline-Linux.rpm |
Ubuntu 20.04, Debian 11, CentOS 7 and 8 and computers with an ARM processor, such as Raspberry Pi, are not supported. If your computer is managed by the IT department, ask them which package to use: they often prefer the .deb or the .rpm, which they install and update with their own tools.
Install the AppImage (every distribution)
- Download the AppImage.
- Move the file to a folder where it will stay, for example
Applicationsin your home folder. Automatic start uses that path: if you move it later, open ArchiviOnline again from the new place and automatic start updates itself. - Make it executable: right-click the file › Properties › Allow executing file as program (or in the Terminal
chmod +x ArchiviOnline-Linux.AppImage). - Open it with a double click and follow the first sign-in.
If the AppImage doesn’t start (nothing happens when you double-click it, or the Terminal shows “Cannot mount AppImage, please check your FUSE setup”): FUSE, the Linux feature that opens AppImages, is missing. Install the fuse3 package: sudo apt install fuse3 on Ubuntu, Debian and Linux Mint; sudo dnf install fuse3 on Fedora, AlmaLinux and Rocky; sudo zypper install fuse3 on openSUSE.
Install the .deb (Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint)
- Download the .deb.
- Open it with Software Install (App Center on Ubuntu 24.04 and later) or in the Terminal:
sudo apt install ./ArchiviOnline-Linux.deb. The system asks for the administrator password and also installs what the app needs. - ArchiviOnline appears in the applications menu.
Install the .rpm (Fedora, openSUSE, AlmaLinux, Rocky)
- Download the .rpm.
- Install it with Software (Fedora) or in the Terminal:
sudo dnf install ./ArchiviOnline-Linux.rpmon Fedora, sudo zypper install ./ArchiviOnline-Linux.rpmon openSUSE. The system asks for the administrator password. - On AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux 10 turn on the EPEL repository first with
sudo dnf install epel-release, then install the package.
Updates
The AppImage updates itself, as on Windows and macOS, and only installs updates signed by Armada. With the .deb and the .rpm the app doesn’t update itself: when a new version is out it tells you in About, with Open the download page. Install the new package over the current one: settings, sign-in and files are kept.
After installing
- The icon opens the menu. The ArchiviOnline icon is in the notification area, at the top. On Linux there is no panel as on Windows and macOS: a click on the icon opens the menu, and the window opens with Open ArchiviOnline.
- If you can’t see the icon: on GNOME (for example Fedora and Debian) you need the AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support extension; after installing it, sign out of the session and back in. Without the icon the app still works from its window.
- The keyring. The computer’s access, never the password, is kept in the session keyring (GNOME Keyring or KWallet). If the keyring is missing or locked, the app’s Status section explains it and offers Create keyring or Unlock.
- For support: in the Terminal
archivionline --diagnostics(with the AppImage, the file name instead ofarchivionline) tells you whether the keyring, the icon and FUSE are ready.
